I Want This!

What Is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a gentle, non-invasive cosmetic procedure that utilizes patented cooling technology to reduce excess fatty tissue in targeted regions of the body. While it is not designed for excessive weight loss or as a treatment for obesity, this non-surgical body sculpting technique can be an excellent way to eliminate stubborn fat that is resistant to dieting and exercise, helping patients attain a slimmer, more toned figure without the hassle of surgery.

How Does CoolSculpting Work?

To diminish fatty buildups, CoolSculpting uses Cryolipolysis—a regulated cooling method designed to freeze fat cells without damaging healthy surrounding tissue. Once frozen, the fat cells begin to break down and die, eventually being eliminated from the body by way of natural metabolic processes. As this reaction occurs over time, the targeted area of fullness should gradually slim to a leaner, more desirable contour.

What Areas of the Body Can CoolSculpting Treat?

Dr. Sarbak has begun employing new CoolFit applicators for the CoolSculpting® procedure. The CoolFit’s flat applicator cup and unique design allow them to target numerous regions of the body for fat reduction, including smaller areas that may have previously been more difficult to address. For ideal candidates, some of the most common regions of the body that can be treated with Coolsculpting include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, and arms.

CoolSculpting vs. Liposuction

Although both treatments are performed to get rid of unwanted fat, CoolSculpting and liposuction are very different. As a non-invasive procedure, CoolSculpting does not require anesthesia, incisions, and/or downtime. Due to this non-surgical nature, however, the amount of fatty tissue that can be reduced is limited. In comparison, liposuction is a surgical technique that utilizes small incisions to extract fatty tissue via a special cannula. This allows for a much greater quantity of fat to be removed, though patients will typically need at least a few days away from work and/or other normal routines. At the time of your consultation, your plastic surgeon can determine which method would be most beneficial for you based on the amount and location of fat to be removed.

What Is the CoolSculpting Procedure Like?

To perform treatment, the appropriate CoolSculpting applicator will be gently guided across the targeted area as it directs controlled cooling energy into the stubborn fatty tissue. As the chilling effect starts to occur, patients typically report experiencing a mild cold and/or tingling sensation until the region becomes numb. Due to this numbing effect, there is virtually no discomfort associated with treatment.

On average, the CoolSculpting procedure takes about one hour per targeted area to perform. At our practice, patients often pass the time by reading, watching movies, using their laptops, or simply relaxing.

Are There Any CoolSculpting Side Effects?

The side effects most commonly associated with CoolSculpting include temporary itching, tingling, redness, and/or minor bruising. That said, these symptoms generally do not prevent patients from resuming normal daily activities and routines soon after they leave our office, if not immediately.

When Will I See My CoolSculpting Results?

CoolSculpting results typically become apparent within two to four months, with some individuals continuing to notice improvement for at least six months. Depending on one’s unique needs and goals, multiple CoolSculpting sessions may be necessary, though most patients are able to achieve their desired results after just one treatment. To help maintain an optimal outcome, our plastic surgeon recommends leading an overall healthy lifestyle that includes a nutritious diet and regular exercise.

How Long Does CoolSculpting Last?

The fat that is destroyed through the CoolSculpting freezing process cannot regenerate and, therefore, the results can be considered permanent. However, the remaining fat cells in the targeted area can increase or decrease in size if the patient experiences weight fluctuations. For this reason patients should maintain a healthy lifestyle with a nutritious diet and routine exercise, making the contouring results they achieve through CoolSculpting long-lasting.

What Does CoolSculpting Cost?

CoolSculpting pricing depends on several different factors, including the number of areas being treated, the experience and skill of the practitioner, and where the practice is geographically located. To obtain a personalized price quote, we encourage you to schedule a consultation with Dr. Sarbak. At this time, he can perform a thorough evaluation and provide an accurate estimate of the total cost based on your specific case. If desired, our practice offers affordable financing options through CareCredit® that can also be discussed with you during your visit.

Additional CoolSculpting Frequently Asked Questions

Is CoolSculpting Safe?

When performed by a qualified professional, CoolSculpting is considered a safe procedure with minimal risk of complications. Mild side effects are normal immediately following your procedure, but these should subside within one to two weeks. As a non-invasive body contouring treatment, CoolSculpting has fewer risks compared to surgical procedures.

How Cold Is CoolSculpting?

The CoolSculpting machine delivers cooling energy that reaches -11 degrees Celsius (or approximately 12.2 degrees Fahrenheit), which is the ideal temperature to freeze excess fat cells without damaging the surrounding tissue. As you can imagine, this can feel extremely cold for the first few minutes of the treatment. Once acclimated, the targeted area should become numb, helping you feel more comfortable throughout the remainder of your treatment.

How Many Inches Can You Lose with CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting results are not typically measured in inches or pounds, but you may notice a sizable difference where the applicators were used. Most patients can look forward to reducing 20-25% of fat in the treated area. Keep in mind that every patient will respond differently to their CoolSculpting treatment, and multiple sessions may be needed to achieve optimal results.

How Can I Reduce Swelling After CoolSculpting?

Swelling is a normal response after CoolSculpting, as the body tries to eliminate the damaged fat cells. This swelling or reported puffiness should begin to fade within several days or a few weeks depending on the patient. To help reduce this side effect, you may be recommended to wear a compression wrap, which helps to facilitate the healing process. Eating healthy and staying hydrated is also helpful for supporting a speedy recovery and reducing the overall swelling.

Can CoolSculpting Treat Cellulite?

Although cellulite is common in areas with excess fat, this is a different type of concern that cannot be treated with CoolSculpting. Cellulite is caused by connective fibers pulling the skin down, which creates its characteristic dimple appearance. CoolSculpting targets isolated pockets of fat and damages those cells with cooling energy. Due to this process by which it works, CoolSculpting cannot address the bands that create cellulite.
