Body contouring is the broad area of cosmetic plastic surgery that involves surgical techniques that are used to alter the contours of a person’s body. The continued increase in the number of obese Americans has led to a growing number of morbidly obese people choosing to undergo gastric bypass surgery. After the massive weight loss has occurred, many patients are finding body-contouring procedures are necessary to remove the excess skin that is leftover after the fat has been shed off.
According to statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 52,049 people had some type of body contouring procedure after massive weight loss in 2003. This is the first year the association has tracked statistics in that particular category, though plastic surgeons agree a significant increase in demand for body contouring exists. Body contouring after major weight loss is not just for cosmetic reasons, but for medical reasons as well.
After a gastrointestinal surgery, most patients will lose 60 to 70 percent of their excess weight, and morbidly obese people can have massive weight loss exceeding 100 pounds. The skin hanging off their now trimmer bodies can prevent patients from exercise, normal activities and put them at risk for skin infections and skin breakdown, making body contouring essential to maintaining a healthy, more active life.
Body contouring methods used to be more associated with breast augmentations, tummy tucks and liposuction, but as plastic surgery trends continue to shift, body contouring demands will naturally follow.
