Recovery After Breast Augmentation with “Gummy Bear” Implants

recovery from breast augmentationRecovery following breast augmentation is an essential part of achieving the results you desire. The healing process with anatomically shaped breast implants, also known as “gummy bear” implants, is very similar to that of round or silicone implants, but there are a few key differences of which you should be aware. Dr. John M. Sarbak, our board certified plastic surgeon, will explain what to expect during your initial consultation. Your experience will be unique to you; however, we have provided a general overview to help you determine if this procedure is right for you.

You should be able to return home the same day as your procedure. Dr. Sarbak will take the necessary measures to ensure your comfort during the healing process. Some swelling, reduced sensitivity, and tenderness is normal, and these effects will fade with time. There will be a few follow-up appointments, in which Dr. Sarbak will discuss any concerns, answer questions, track your progress, and remove bandages at the appropriate stage of recovery.

Your most important responsibility is to rest. Most patients take about one week to relax and heal before returning to work. Additionally, you should not lift anything over about 10 pounds (a heavy purse) for the first month, or as long as Dr. Sarbak recommends. For anatomically shaped breast implants, you must be extra careful to limit physical activity with the upper body, particularly if the implants are placed under the muscle. Since the implants have a teardrop shape that more closely matches the natural contour of breasts, there is no need to massage the implants to help them “move into position.” They will be placed in the ideal position during surgery and should remain there.

Breast augmentation offers many benefits, and strictly following the recovery instructions after surgery can help to ensure your results are as appealing as you anticipated.
